FNSC6313 - Jeremy Wu: Choosing a more specific thesis topic

Hi Professor Kwan,

After further consideration and study of your powerpoint, I think I've now got a better idea of what you meant by "narrowing" my topic. Previously I couldn't really understand how I needed to narrow the "prebiotic effects on gut microbiome" topic, which lead me to think that "prebiotic effects on microbiome and thus immunity" would be more specific. Now i think I know what I'm supposed to be doing. Please correct me if I'm still wrong though:

I'm planning to look into a few specific prebiotics (e.g. inulin and fructooligosaccarides, etc.) and their effects on certain gut microbes -

1) I might focus on prebiotic effects on pathogenic bacteria and how this can then affect the immune system (still like my earlier immunity idea, but just more specific this time).
OR
2) I might focus on prebiotic effects on probiotic bacteria - maybe lactobacillus and bifidobacteria and how they benefit from prebiotics, and how this ultimately benefits health.

Am I sort of on the right track right now?

Sincerely,
Jeremy
